With the 228, of which production started in 1987, Maserati wanted to offer an alternative to the large luxury coupés from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The design of the 228 recalls much to the Biturbo, but its lines were softer and the 228 was built on the longer chassis sourced from the 4-door Biturbo models. The engine capacity was increased to 2.8L. The 228 was a very luxurious coupé and standard equipment included power steering, alloy wheels, central locking, electric windows and hand-stitched leather seats. ABS was available on request.
