DESCRIPTION
The Maserati Gran Turismo tradition began in 1947 at the Geneva Motor Show, with the introduction of the A6 1500 Gran Turismo. Styled by Pinin Farina, it was the first road-going Maserati, of which only 61 examples were produced. The car’s technical features and original, cutting-edge style were enthusiastically received by the motoring press. The overhead-cam engine incorporated a sophisticated valvetrain for the era, employing rockers to actuate the valves that allowed for easy valve adjustments. The tubular chassis was light and strong, built up from round section steel tubes welded together. The interior was elegantly designed and finished, featuring leather upholstery, comprehensive instruments and novel design touches like the clock, which was built into the glovebox lid, and clutch and brake pedals featuring the famous Maserati Trident logo. The A6 Gran Turismo was a genuinely revolutionary car, and signaled the marque’s beginning as a maker of luxurious sports cars for the road. The inspired Pinin Farina body was an elegant, timeless design whose echoes resonate in Maserati automobiles even to this day.
