De belangrijkste technische ontwikkeling voor de Quattroporte was de introductie van een automaat op het autosalon van Detroit in 2007. De Duoselect-transmissie in de Quattroporte bleek perfect te passen bij Maserati’s sportieve reputatie, maar naar een pure automaat was er altijd al vraag geweest. Toch is de Quattroporte Automatica zoveel meer dan een Quattroporte met een nieuwe versnellingsbak. Van de 16.500 onderdelen in de Quattroporte waren er 4.800 nieuw. De aandrijflijn was dat in zijn geheel, van de motor met zijn nat carter (de F136UC) en de zestrapsautomaat van ZF over de cardanas tot het beperkt slipdifferentieel. De Quattroporte Automatica was verkrijgbaar in een standaardversie, als Sport GT en als Executive GT. Later zou de levendigere Sport GT S de Sport GT gaan vervangen.
