Met de 228, die in 1987 in productie ging, wilde Maserati een alternatief bieden voor de grote luxecoupés van Mercedes-Benz en BMW. De 228 doet qua ontwerp hard denken aan de Biturbo, maar heeft zachtere lijnen en staat op het langere chassis van de Biturbo-vierdeurs. De cilinderinhoud werd opgetrokken naar 2,8 l. Aan luxe ontbrak het de 228 niet: stuurbekrachtiging, lichtmetalen velgen, centrale vergrendeling en zetels in handgestikt leder waren allemaal standaard. ABS was dan weer optioneel.
