From Hong Kong to London, retracing the 13.000 miles of the Tea Route
A new record to beat for Maserati Multi70 and Giovanni Soldini: After claiming the records for the United States’ “Gold Route” from New York to San Francisco and the “Tea Clipper Trade Route” between San Francisco and Shanghai, China, the latest record attempt follows the route of the clipper ships that at the end of the 19th Century transported their cargoes of tea from Hong Kong to London via the Cape of Good Hope.
The current record time, set in 2008 by Frenchman Lionel Lemonchois and his eight-man crew aboard the 100-foot catamaran Gitana 13, is 41 days, 21 hours, 26 minutes and 34 seconds.
Giovanni Soldini aims to attempt the record breaking run in January 2018 aboard the Maserati Multi70 trimaran along with four expert ocean racing sailors: Sébastien Audigane (FRA), Guido Broggi (ITA), Oliver Herrera (ESP) and Alex Pella (ESP).
13,000 miles, 24,000 kilometres non-stop: This is an uncommonly long route for a 70-foot multihull such as Maserati Multi70. To minimise the risk of damage, instead of sailing in foiling mode the boat will be set up in MOD configuration – although the work to develop the boat’s foiling dagger boards continues with the support of the eminent high-performance yacht designer, Guillaume Verdier.
Maserati Multi70 trimaran
21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam, the Maserati Multi70 is as glistening and grand as the seas it will brave. Innovative, stunning and blindingly fast, the Multi70 is primed for new ocean challenges.
Soldini’s crew will use both races to help them develop the Maserati Multi70 trimaran to its full potential as an offshore foiling raceboat.
However, the boat will remain in ‘development mode’ for the first event with a conventional MOD70 foil on the right-hand side and a custom foiling daggerboard on the left. It is planned for the second foiling daggerboard to be fitted in time for the Transpac.
Stretching 21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam, Maserati Multi70 sports a 29-metre rotating wing mast and displaces 6.3 tons. She also rises up out of the water on her foils and rudders with an unprecedented degree of stability. This reduces her wetted surface area which in turn boosts performance.
Designed by Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) and a former member of the Team Gitana racing stable, Maserati Multi70 has been optimised by French designer Guillaume Verdier for the new challenges that lie in store.

Maserati Multi70 Skipper
Born in Milan on May 16 1966, Giovanni has been sailing since he was a small boy.
He has over 25 years of ocean racing to his credit, including two single-handed round the worlds (he won the Around Alone in 1999 and made history by also rescuing Isabelle Autissier, and finished second overall in the 1995 BOC Challenge), six Québec-Saint Malos (one victory in the monohull category), six Ostars (two victories in the 50’ and 40’ classes), three Transat Jacques Vabres (one victory in the 40’ class) and over 40 ocean crossings.
Soldini also set a slew of records aboard the VOR70 Maserati, not least on the Cadiz-San Salvador route(2012) and the New York-San Francisco Gold Route (13,225 miles in 47 days, 42’and 29”).
He established the new time to beat too on the San Francisco-Shanghai Tea Clipper Route (3,300 miles in 21 days, 19 hours, 32’ and 54”).
In 2016, after an intense three years aboard Maserati VOR70, Soldini and his team embarked on a new adventure with Maserati Multi70, marking a return for the Milanese yachtsman to multihull sailing (he had previously competed in crew races with the 60’ trimaran Tim).
