The 430 was launched in 1987 to be sold alongside the 425 at first, before finally replacing it from 1989. It was equipped with the new 2.8L fuel-injected engine from the 228, and as such was intended primarily for export markets. The power output reached 250hp for versions without catalytic converter, and 225hp in markets where a catalytic converted was required by local regulations. The top speed exceeded 240km/h, with the possibility of specifying active electronic damping as extra. Such performance, paired with the particular refinement of the interior, made the 430 a contender at the very top end of the saloon market. 995 cars were built between 1987 and 1994. The new 4 valve-per-cylinder heads were adopted on the 430 from 1991, increasing the power output to 279hp. The car was assigned the 430 4v. nametag, to differentiate it from the three-valve model, which was maintained. Both models benefited from the latest styling upgrades: new slimmer headlights, wider front grille, new bumpers and sills, 7-spoke alloys and spoilers on the boot lid and at the base of the windscreen.
