The need for speed

When British snowboarder Jamie Barrow set out to break his own world snowboard speed record he turned to Maserati to help. And towed behind a Levante S across the frozen surface of a Swiss lake, he did just that hitting a top speed of 151.57km/h.

British snowboarder Jamie Barrow simply lives for speed.

Already the holder of a couple of downhill and vehicle tow snowboard speed records, he always thought he could do better. And in February with more than a little help from a Maserati Levante S, he did just that, hitting a maximum speed of 151.57km/h across a frozen lake surface in St Moritz, Switzerland.

With a return run  - required by the Guinness World Record guidelines - across the 100m course clocking in at 147.72 km/h, Barrow claimed the new world record for the “fastest speed on a snowboard being towed by a vehicle” of an averaged 149.65km/h.

Speaking after the runs, Barrow said he was absolutely delighted to have smashed his previous world record set in 2016 by nearly 50km/h.

“I always knew there was much more speed possible with the right conditions and crucially the right car to tow me. The Maserati Levante made light work of the icy and snowy conditions, giving us the grip to really hit top speed,” he said.

Apart from being fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Winter tyres – each with a total of 474, 4mm long studs to enable grip on the ice – the Levante S was stock standard with its Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system and twin-turbo V6 ensuring it delivered the performance Barrow needed.

Maserati Head of Marketing Jacob Nyborg, said it was a fantastic effort by Barrow and the company was proud to have been involved.

“The new Maserati Levante SUV has performance at its heart, so this was the perfect way to show its off-road capabilities, while helping Jamie break a new Guinness World Record,” he said.
