Kubang Concept Car

Italdesign

The first ever sport luxury SUV.

Proposed for a product that married the sportiness and standing of Maserati with the SUV formula, which had begun its unstoppable race to popularity, the Kubang was exhibited as a static model at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show.

It had the name of a wind that blows across the island of Java and approached the typology of a car that had been little explored until then and which Maserati was seriously considering for production in synergy with Audi.
At the time, negotiations were taking place with the German company to share the platform and technology, but agreement was never reached.
During the development of the Quattroporte, a platform was designed for the possible adoption of 4x4 transmission for both the saloon and other types of vehicle.

The availability of financial and human resources forced the company to make decisions that favoured other models, so the Kubang remained an exercise in style that was never followed up as it deserved, as shown by the success of models of the same philosophy that were introduced not long afterwards, like the Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X6.
