Maserati Multi70 trimaran

Stretching 21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam, Maserati Multi 70 sports a 29-metre rotating wing mast and displaces 6.3 tons. She also rises up out of the water on her foils and rudders with an unprecedented degree of stability. This reduces her wetted surface area which in turn boosts performance. Designed by Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) and a former member of the Team Gitana racing stable, Maserati Multi70 has been optimised by French designer Guillaume Verdier for the new challenges that lie in store.

Today, thanks to a unique study carried out by the engineers of the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, the aerodynamic knowledge and virtual analysis tools usually used when developing cars have been applied to the Maserati Multi 70 trimaran, to boost its performances and aerodynamics, and to enhance its flight attributes, by means of special hydrodynamic profiles.

Maserati Multi70 Skipper

Born in Milan on May 16 1966, Giovanni has been sailing since he was a small boy. He has over 25 years of ocean racing to his credit, including two single-handed round the worlds (he won the Around Alone in 1999 and made history by also rescuing Isabelle Autissier, and finished second overall in the 1995 BOC Challenge), six Québec-Saint Malos (one victory in the monohull category), six Ostars (two victories in the 50’ and 40’ classes), three Transat Jacques Vabres (one victory in the 40’ class) and over 40 ocean crossings.

Soldini also set a slew of records aboard the VOR70 Maserati, not least on the Cadiz-San Salvador route(2012) and the New York-San Francisco Gold Route (13,225 miles in 47 days, 42’and 29”), other than participating in 2 editions of the Transpac Race, finishing second in the monohull class in the 2013 edition. Maserati & Giovanni Soldini: a technical partnership

A collaboration between people moved by passion, adrenaline and the search for maximum performance, values that have been shared by Maserati and Giovanni Soldini since 2012, the year in which the collaboration began and that goes beyond sponsorship. A collaboration that is now a technical partnership as well, focused on the transfer of technological know-how from the world of cars to the world of high-performance yachts.  The engineers of the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena - the heart of the Brand's technological research, development and design - have carried out an innovative study to apply the aerodynamic knowledge and virtual analysis tools usually used when developing cars to the Maserati Multi 70 trimaran, to boost its performances and aerodynamics, and to enhance its flight attributes, by means of special hydrodynamic profiles.

The Maserati engineers analysed the data of Maserati Multi 70's latest races to identify the key parameters of its motion. They made an in-depth study of the craft's current configurations to identify possible areas of improvement using advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, able to predict the behaviour of the complex flows created around the trimaran. Virtual tools were also used to test different hull streamlining and sheet configurations, on the one hand to reduce the boat's resistance to the air and on the other to increase the efficiency of its sails by controlling extremity phenomena. The outcome of these studies was a reduction of about 5% in the entire vessel's aerodynamic penetration (Cx) coefficient. What's more, improving the flows around the craft enables the sails to work more efficiently, increasing propulsion force by 4% with a less than 1% rise in heeling force. With these results, the yacht's cruising speed could now exceed 43 knots in ideal conditions.

By applying its technical expertise even to sailing, Maserati yet again reaffirms its aptitude for innovation, adopting Maserati Multi 70 as a continually evolving "laboratory boat”.
