Infineon Raceway - USA

Renaud Kuppens

Kuppens first again

Kuppens seemed at home at Sonoma as he claimed first spot and another pole position in Qualifying 2.

The Belgian's 1:43.896 was slower than the time he set in the first session but he increased the gap over the others. In second was the Italian, Sernagiotto, also second in the Overall standings with team-mate Fascicolo. In third is a 'home' driver in the form of Johannes Van Overbeek (1:45.027) with the Venezuelan Popow next (.704 down) after clipping the wall. Row three is filled by Simoni and Denny with Columbian, Merjech, and Dutchman, Bakker, up next.

Tadlaoui, Azcarate, Nielsen and Hollywood stuntman Greg Tracy follow - Tracy, who performs daring feats for Hotwheels, still has to get used to the Sonoma track.

Fourteenth is Andrea Gardelli, ahead of Ryan Ockey, Jonathan Becker, Owen Kratz, Henrik Hedman and Andreas Segler.

The De Leener family feud was won by son Adrien who put in a quicker lap than Pierre, his father. Bringing up the rear is Rasmussen, from Denmark.

Kuppens clocks the top time

Renaud Kuppens ended top of the pile in qualifying at Sonoma, in the USA.

The Belgian, who collected the Trofeo Europa in July, made the most of having a free track to freeze the stopwatch at 1:43.884. The lap was .355 up on Venezuelan Alex Popow, a driver familiar with American circuits. Placing third, in a time of 1:45.155, was Swiss driver Fabio Venier. Venier found the right trajectory towards the end of the session, nudging Monaco-based Cedric Sbirrazzuoli onto row two. In fifth came Riccardo Ragazzi with sixth going to Andrea Dromedari. Richard Denny secured a positive eighth while actor Patrick Dempsey's 1.46.931 was good enough for tenth, ahead of Moroccan driver Tadlaoui. In sixteenth (1:48.515) came Damon Ockey, one of the two brothers who have come down from Canada to compete in the Trofeo.

At the back of the field, grouped within a second of each other, are Jonathan Becker, Andreas Segler, Owen Kratz, Mads Rasmussen and Pierre De Leener. For this bunch, things will be tight during the race as they are very evenly matched.
