Gente Motori, the motoring monthly, tested the Maserati GranTurismo S in its July 2008 issue. The overall opinion was very positive: the Maserati coupé is, without a doubt, one of the best grand tourers around; a car that fears no comparisons.
What most struck journalist Marco Marelli was the gearbox: “An extraordinary electro-actuated gearbox that amazes for how the gears slot into place that is also smooth when you want a comfortable ride. This latest system sets standards that make it the finest on today’s market. Aside from the reduced gear change times, the slick, flawless shifts mean startling pick-up every time”.
The praise did not end there as the car really delivers when the driver steps on the gas: “The peak is when you are above 5500 rpm and the accelerator is at 80%. Then the changes are lightning quick and the increase in speed is astonishing”.
These characteristics make the GranTurismo S a pleasure to drive, as the article goes on to state. “On windy roads, you appreciate how the engine pulls even when it is below the maximum torque level. If you change gears manually using the paddles set behind the steering wheel, the drive becomes a relaxing one in true grand touring fashion”.
All this comes without skimping on comfort given that the GranTurismo S is “restful, well finished and, above all, well insulated until the ‘Sport’ button is selected. This switch alters the engine note and the sound that comes out of the exhausts is incredible”.
Marelli ends: “the GranTurismo S has a thousand and one personalities and it is a pleasure to discover them all as they can reflect whatever mood you are in when you get behind the wheel”.
