Maserati Boomerang Makes A Comeback
The stunning 1972 Maserati Boomerang concept car was auctioned for over $1m by Christie's at the 2005 Rétromobile last weekend.

Christie's International Motor Cars Department had accurately estimated the price of this unique, wedge-shaped Maserati to be ý700,000-900,000 (or US$920,000-1,000,000) - it actually sold for ý781,250. The auction was held on Saturday 12 February at the annual Rétromobile event, a vintage car exhibition held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

The Boomerang was initially exhibited as a static model at the 1971 Turin Motor Show. It was turned to a fully road-going prototype by the Geneva Motor Show of the following year. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it was extreme in concept with the front bonnet and windscreen united in a single plane, at an insanely low angle. The mechanicals were borrowed from the 4.7-litre Bora, introduced just a year before. The Boomerang was as radically styled inside as it was outside, notably with an instrument cluster protruding forward of the steering wheel.
