Maserati and respect for the environment
Respect for the environment is something that is critically important to Maserati. This is why Maserati has established a five-year plan aimed at cutting the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of its cars.
The project is mainly focused on the engines with the objective being to improve their mechanical and thermo-dynamic performance. This is achieved by tweaking the internal fluid dynamics and through using new strategies governing how the engine manages heat and electrics and how it runs auxiliary components. To this end, Maserati is considering using a fuel mixture with a higher percentage of bio-combustibles.
As for the cars, attention will be paid to lowering their weight and to aerodynamics. This is an area in which Maserati has already achieved significant goals thanks to its use of light and innovative materials and through long sessions in the wind tunnel, reducing both rolling resistance and friction inside the cars.
The plan to preserve the environment includes the use of materials that contain an ever-higher percentage of recyclable materials and natural components, above all in the interior, a place where the owner comes most into contact with the car (Maserati uses natural fibres, wood and leather).
The project for Maserati cars is ‘design for recycling’. This takes into account the ease with which the car can be dismantled and the possibility of identifying materials so that they can be separated clearly into different types for any eventual re-use.
Recent models have obtained a substantial fuel reduction in extra urban cycles with 9% less fuel used by the Quattroporte Automatic and the Quattroporte Sport GT S and 3% less by the GranTurismo.
