A Tour of the Lakes

The route from Riva del Garda to Arona

The route from Riva del Garda to Arona is an unforgettable driving and life experience, a journey to be enjoyed slowly, with long stops to enjoy the stunning scenery. However, for racing lovers, it is above all an opportunity to travel along the legendary routes driven by the heroes of motor racing, from Nuvolari to Fangio and Ascari. Whether you prefer to complete the journey in one stretch or in stages, this 300-kilometre route stands out for its beauty and its unforgettable locations. From Riva del Garda, travel towards Desenzano, taking the road that runs alongside the western shore of Lake Garda through Parco dell'Alto Garda. Against this backdrop, your Maserati will feel like a diamond travelling through a jewel.

When you reach Desenzano don't be surprised if the rumble of the Maserati is especially lively; the stretch from Desenzano to Brescia was the last part of the first Mille Miglia route in 1927. This road, now the SS240, has been driven on by the Maseratis that made history, and was the setting for the epic deeds of heroes such as Clemente Biondetti, Tazio Nuvolari, Giuseppe Campari, Achille Varzi and Luigi Musso who, along with Augusto Zocca, took Maserati to the podium in 1954. At Brescia, take the A4 motorway until the Bergamo exit, then join the SP72 heading towards Lecco. On the horizon you will see one of the branches of Lake Como, immortalised at the beginning of 'The Betrothed' by Alessandro Manzoni. Incredible panoramas line the lake’s coast from Lecco to Bellagio, and then on to Como, with its wonderful villas made famous by the many celebrities that have made their home there.

Continue towards Varese to reach Arona and Lake Maggiore, the smallest of the three lakes though every bit as charming. The towns of Arona are magnificent, with wonderful islands that were once visited by Napoleon and his beloved Josephine. Verbania is equally as enchanting and, according to the environmental association Lega Ambiente, it is the least polluted city in Italy. This makes it the ideal place to end this Maserati tour as in recent years the House of the Trident has improved its engine’s performance and reduced its emissions, supporting the action taken by virtuous communities to reduce energy waste and pollution, while improving standards of living and the quality of the air.
