Maserati finishes Transpac 2013 in second position
At 3.02.38 am Italian time (3.02.38 pm local time), Giovanni Soldini and Maserati’s crew sailed across the finish-line of the 47th edition of the Transpac Race in Honolulu to take second position in Division 1.
The Italian crew covered the 2,225 miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu in 7 days, 5 hours, 2 minutes and 38 seconds. Maserati is the first manual winch boat in Division 1 to finish the race.
Aside from skipper Soldini, Maserati has a further crew ofeight: Guido Broggi, John Elkann, Carlos Hernandez, Boris Herrmann, Gwen Riou, Corrado Rossignoli, Michele Sighel and Jianghe “Tiger” Teng. Pierre-LaurentBoullais, a sailing enthusiast friend of John Elkann, is the tenth man aboard.
“We are delighted and very satisfied,” said a happy Soldini . “It was a fantastic race and our tactical calls paid off. Sailing south was the right thing to do. We managed to keep Wizard at a distance. With Ragamuffin, there wasn’t much we could do: she’s a 100′ yacht, she’s much bigger and lighter than us, and she has electric winches. She is 2 knots faster than us in following winds of under 20 knots, but in cross winds, we were head-to-head. I’m very proud of my team. We really gelled and our manoeuvres are textbook at this stage. Aloha everybody from Honolulu!”
“It was a great adventure and an amazing experience,” declared John Elkann. “I’m happy we made it and I feel we really deserve this silver medal”.
The 100’ yacht Ragamuffin took line honours in Division 1 of the Transpac 2013 (for larger monohulls) in a non-record time of 6 days, 8 hours and 17 minutes. American yacht Wizard (R/P 74) finished at 5:53:46 am this morning (Italian time) in third.
The Transpac 2013 is a 2,225-nautical mile crewed race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, and is open to both multi- and monohull yachts. The race got underway from a start-line off rugged Point Fermin, San Pedro, Los Angeles, at 10 pm Italian time (1 pm local time) on July 13th. The finish-line is just off Diamond Head Lighthouse (east of Honolulu), on Oahu Island, Hawaii.
The other yachts in Division 1 aside from the VOR 70 Maserati: Bad Park (STP65), Invisible Hand (R/P 63), Medicine Man (Andrews 63) and Wizard (RP 74), all American, the Australian boat Ragamuffin (Elliot 100) and Peligroso (Kernan 70) from Mexico.
